Six Nations of the Grand River TerritoryAccording to oral traditions, the American continent has been populated with People since the great divide that formed the earthen land masses. Originally, five Nations occupied the Finger Lake region of New York State. These Nations are the Mohawk, Oneida, Cayuga, Seneca and the Onondaga. These five warring Nations unified under the "Great Tree of Peace", following the message brought by the "Peacemaker". In the 1700's the Iroquois Confederacy would invite the Tuscarora to live in peace and they would become the sixth nation. During the American Revolution, Captain Joseph Brant led many from the Iroquois Confederacy to ally with the British. For their loyalty to the Crown, the track of land was granted to Joseph Brant and his Iroquois followers in 1784 in appreciation of their support in the American Revolution. They later welcomed a group of Delawares to the reserve. The current reserves encompass about 46,000 acres, recognized as "Six Nations reserve No. 40". Today Six Nations
of the
Grand River is the most populous reserve in Canada, and is viewed as
one
of the most progressive native communities in North America.
